OLD “no rally” banners were recycled on Wednesday evening as opponents of last year’s world championship car rally in the Tweed protested on the steps of the Tweed Shire Council building.
The protesters made their view clear both outside and inside the chambers, where a committee appointed by the State Government was hearing submissions for a review of the controversial event.
Murwillumbah business representatives met privately with the review team to express support for the motorsport event earlier in the week.
Chris Degenhardt, who attended on Wednesday, said 150 anti-rally “defenders” turned up compared to two rally supporters.
“The larger than expected anti-rally turnout showed that if the rally circus dares to invade our green and pleasant land again, they will face much more opposition than before,” he said.
“Hopefully, the review, when tabled in parliament, will show how inappropriate a motor sport event is in the Mt Warning caldera area.”
