Fighters to ignore dispute

VETERAN boxing trainer Tony Nobbs insists an ugly dispute with gym administrators has not affected his fighters’ preparations ahead of tomorrow’s fight night.

“My boxers are ready to rumble,” Nobbs said yesterday.

“We’re always ready.”

Despite being forced to train from Nobbs’ private stable, four of the Tweed’s hottest boxing prospects are set to trade blows at the Gold Coast Convention Centre tomorrow night on undercard bouts to the Shannan Taylor – Les Sherrington blockbuster.

On what shapes as promoter Jamie Myer’s and the Gold Coast’s biggest fight night for 2009, Trevor Jacky, Casey Hannan, Matt Burns and Rob Coorey are out to stake their claim as one of the top teams in the country – gym or no gym.

“They have trained in a garage for the past two weeks with only hand pads to use for technique,” Nobbs said.

“They’ve completed some good sparring sessions with the likes of Les (Sherrington) though and are pretty much where I want them.

“We’re a great team and all the boys have the heart and skill to beat any opponent.”

A successful night could well end with three of the four powerhouses boasting Australian top 10 ratings.

Jacky is already rated No.7 nationally in the light heavyweight division while Hannan and Burns hope to join him with victories over Alex Ahtong (No.8 welterweight) and Chris Stewart (No.7 middleweight) respectively.

Coorey will box fellow pro-debutant Billy Stewart in the first bout of the evening at 7.30pm.
