Cops take no prisoners

WITH Alan Hogg being a Tweed Heads policeman and his wife Kellie a Coolangatta cop, Origin time is always interesting in their household.

But yesterday, the competition between husband and wife stepped up a notch as they battled it out with other officers on the footy field in Coolangatta.

In the lead-up to last night's State of Origin, it was officers from Tweed Heads versus their Coolangatta counterparts at Queen Elizabeth Park.

And while both teams swore the game was “friendly”, the gloves were clearly off as the players fought, scuffled and tackled each other in their bid to take the title.

Yesterday's match was the third for 2009 between the rival police teams, who said they tried to play each time there was an Origin match.

Sergeant Mal Kentwell of Tweed police said the game allowed officers from both sides of the border to spend time together in a fun and social environment.

“This is our annual event where NSW police play Queensland police,” he said. “It's a friendly game to improve our relations and it's a good excuse to have that social aspect.”

Snr Constable Hogg said the stakes were high, because whoever won yesterday's game would win the series.

“It's pretty even,” he said. “Last year we won two to one. This year the first game was washed out and the second one was a draw.”
